Doug Atkins looks back on a baseball odyssey that began in the dusty backyard of his family home in Mississippi, where he and his identical twin, Brandon Atkins, first chased a love of the game.
Sibling Rivalry and Early Triumphs
Year after year the twins earned All-Star nods in Dixie Youth Baseball, culminating in a state championship that cemented their reputation as the premier duo in the region.
Their high school years at Adams County Christian School in Natchez, Mississippi, kept the brothers intertwined, before they each moved on to Copiah-Lincoln Community College, where the Wolves advanced to the JUCO World Series.
In 2003 Doug transferred to Troy University, while Brandon continued his career at Southeastern Louisiana University before the two finally reunited on the same roster.
Doug’s pitching duels with powerhouses such as Auburn not only tested his mettle but also proved that the twins could compete at the highest levels of college baseball.
A Historic Postseason for Troy
Troy University’s baseball team made history by reaching the College World Series for the first time, upsetting nationally recognized programs like the Miami Hurricanes and the Florida Gators to earn a Super Regional berth.
During that run Doug was coaching a youth team in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, watching the drama unfold from the sidelines and feeling a deep personal connection to the milestone.
The postseason journey has given Doug a chance to reflect on a career shaped by backyard competitions, shared championships, and the unbreakable bond with his twin brother, a relationship that still informs his love of the sport today.
