The Texas Longhorns announced the dismissal of linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith, a move that comes just as the program is grappling with a thinning depth chart at the position. Smith’s exit was confirmed after he missed practice due to illness, leaving the coaching staff with a sudden vacancy just weeks before the season opener.
Smith had logged 75 tackles, 2.5 sacks and three interceptions over 28 collegiate appearances, numbers that hinted at a player ready to step into a starting role. Though he had only started one game in his career, his experience and production made him a key piece of the defensive rotation.
The dismissal follows the departures of several seasoned defenders, including Anthony Hill Jr. and Trey Moore, who both entered the NFL after the previous season, and Liona Lefau, who transferred to Colorado after making 21 starts. To fill the void, Texas recruited Rasheem Biles and Justin Cryer, both touted as promising additions to the linebacker corps.
With those departures, the roster now leans heavily on senior Brad Spence, whose experience provides a steady anchor, and on true freshmen Tyler Atkinson and Rocky Cummings, who are expected to see increased snaps as the staff evaluates their readiness. The competition for playing time is intensifying, and the newcomers will have the chance to prove themselves early in the season.
