Ty’Anthony Smith, a linebacker who spent three seasons with the Texas Longhorns, has been released from the program as the team reshapes its defense ahead of the 2026 campaign.
A New Defensive Direction
The decision comes as new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp seeks to implement a different scheme that emphasizes versatility and depth at the linebacker position.
Muschamp, who returned to Austin after stints at several SEC programs, has emphasized a broader rotation that will see the linebacker corps split into distinct roles, a shift from the more traditional, single‑gap approach of previous years.
The Longhorns have bolstered that unit with four transfer linebackers — Rasheem Biles, Justin Cryer, Markus Boswell and Darius Snow — who arrived in the offseason and are expected to compete for starting spots.
Smith’s departure is not entirely unexpected. The 2024 three‑star recruit appeared in 28 games over two seasons, contributing 60 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions and three forced fumbles, while also serving on special teams.
As a true freshman in 2024, he logged 16 tackles, 1.5 for loss, one interception and a pass breakup in all 16 contests, showcasing the playmaking ability that initially earned him a scholarship.
The move also clears roster space for the new arrivals and signals a competitive environment that could benefit the defense’s overall performance.
The Longhorns open the 2026 season on September 5 against the Texas State Bobcats, a game that will be televised on ESPN at 2:30 p.m. CT.
