A Recruiting Boost for the Sooners
The Oklahoma Sooners baseball program has announced the addition of Tyler Johnson to its coaching staff as an assistant coach. Johnson, the son of veteran coach Skip Johnson, arrives after a series of successful roles that have sharpened his ability to identify and nurture talent.
Before arriving in Norman, Johnson served as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at Dallas Baptist University, where he helped shape a recruiting pipeline that produced multiple All‑Conference USA selections in a single season. His experience includes a head coaching tenure at McLennan Community College, a program he led to notable achievements on the national stage.
During his time at McLennan, Johnson oversaw the development of 44 all‑conference honorees and saw seven of his players drafted into Major League Baseball. He also guided five athletes to All‑Conference USA honors within one year, underscoring his impact on player progression.
Skip Johnson, who joins the Sooners with a reputation for a strong recruiting pedigree, expressed enthusiasm about his son’s new role. "We’re excited to bring fresh energy and a proven track record to our staff," he said, highlighting the family’s deep roots in collegiate baseball.
The move comes shortly after the Sooners celebrated a national championship, a moment that also saw recruiting coordinator Todd Butler transition to the same position at the University of Florida. Butler’s departure creates an opening that Johnson is poised to fill, promising continuity and new strategic direction for the program.
