Weather Delays Championship
Typhoon Dolphin swept across the Zhejiang province earlier this week, forcing the Asian University Basketball League (AUBL) to halt its championship series in Hangzhou. The league announced that both the final and the third‑place playoff would be rescheduled, with new dates to be confirmed once weather conditions improve.
The competition, which gathered 12 universities from six countries and territories, was slated to crown its champion this weekend. Organizers have said the disruption will not deter their ambition to broaden the league to 16 teams next season, and eventually to 30 teams, a scale that would bring it closer to the structure of college basketball in North America.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University had already secured a spot in the final, edging past Peking University in a nail‑biting 79‑77 victory before the weather forced a pause. The close finish highlighted the high stakes for the student‑athletes, who view the tournament as a platform for showcasing talent and cultural exchange.
Beyond the on‑court drama, the AUBL’s organizers stress that the event reflects the spirit of contemporary youth and university life, blending sport with education and regional cooperation. They point to the tournament’s role in fostering dialogue among young scholars across Asia.
