Ty'Quarius Shannon, a three-star wide receiver from Fairfield Central High School in Winnsboro, South Carolina, announced his commitment to Gardner-Webb University, choosing the program over offers from The Citadel, Campbell, East Tennessee State and Morgan State.
The decision came after a series of interactions that began with an offer from Gardner-Webb on May 18, 2026, following a conversation with inside wide receivers coach AC Whaley. Shannon took an official visit to the campus on June 21, 2026, and cited the relationships he built with the coaching staff and the program’s vision as the primary factors in his choice.
On the field, Shannon posted a breakout 2025 season, recording 38 receptions for 1,006 yards and 16 touchdowns, helping the Griffins finish 10-4 and reach the Class 2A South Carolina High School League state semifinals.
Rated as the No. 1802 overall prospect nationally and the No. 246 wide receiver by Rivals, he is also listed as the No. 31 player in South Carolina. His performance placed him among the top prospects in the state, underscoring the significance of his commitment for Gardner-Webb’s recruiting class.
In a statement, Shannon emphasized the importance of fit, saying, “The connections I made with the coaches felt genuine, and the university’s vision aligned with my goals both on and off the field.” His choice reflects a growing trend where personal relationships and program direction outweigh sheer brand prestige.
