Tyrone Mitchell has been named the new head coach of Xavier University’s men’s basketball program, capping a career that has intertwined playing, recruiting, and leadership over more than a decade at the school.
A Legacy of Leadership
During his 11‑year tenure, Mitchell helped the Gold Rush compile 182 victories, posting a .679 winning percentage and achieving six 20‑win seasons. He guided Xavier to three conference tournament championships in 2020, 2021 and 2023, and secured first‑round NAIA national tournament wins in three consecutive years from 2021 through 2023.
Before entering coaching, Mitchell starred as a point guard at Northwestern State, where he remains the program’s career leader in steals with 264. After a seven‑year professional stint in Europe, he returned to the United States to pursue coaching, culminating in his induction into the Northwestern State N‑Club Hall of Fame in 2025.
Xavier Vice President Curtis Wright praised Mitchell’s contributions, emphasizing his commitment to student‑athletes, deep knowledge of the game, and embodiment of Xavier’s values. Executive Director Pat Kendrick echoed the sentiment, highlighting Mitchell’s longstanding dedication to the university’s athletes and his readiness to lead the program forward.
The university community anticipates that Mitchell’s blend of competitive experience, player development focus, and institutional familiarity will propel the program toward continued success while preserving the culture of excellence he has helped build.
