Tyus Thomas and Djafar Silimana Commit to Houston Cougars

Freshmen sign scholarships as program eyes national championship

In May, Houston Men’s Basketball announced the addition of two incoming freshmen, Tyus Thomas and Djafar Silimana, who have each signed scholarship agreements with the program, bringing immediate depth to the roster.

A Tough Guard Joins the Ranks

Thomas arrives after a standout senior season at Liberty High, where he averaged 14.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists and led his team to the Class 5A state championship game, earning MVP honors. Coach Kelvin Sampson described Thomas as a tough and tremendous young man, emphasizing his readiness to contribute at the collegiate level.

Silimana, known for his height and defensive prowess, will provide rim protection and elite defense that should complement senior forward Joseph Tugler, giving the team a versatile frontcourt option.

Defensive Anchor in the Paint

Coach Sampson has indicated that Silimana could emerge as a key contributor in his second or third year, adding another layer of depth as the Cougars chase a national championship.

Coach Sampson’s Vision

The arrivals of Thomas and Silimana not only fill gaps left by departing seniors Emanuel Sharp and Milos Uzan, but also reinforce a backcourt and frontcourt that could prove decisive in the team’s title aspirations.
