Zurich — A Night of Drama in Group A
The United States edged Germany 4‑3 in a shootout that will be remembered for Ryan Leonard’s composure under pressure, the forward slotting the decisive penalty and sending the Americans back to the top of Group A with five points.
Just days earlier the defending champions had been humbled 6‑2 by Finland, a loss that threatened their campaign, but a resilient performance in Zurich has turned the tide, giving the U.S. a chance to rebound against Latvia on Saturday.
Germany opened the scoring when captain Moritz Seider struck in the first minute, but the Americans answered quickly as Isaac Howard equalised before the end of the opening period and Max Sasson put them ahead early in the second. A late rally by the Germans, sparked by Frederik Tiffels and Marc Michaelis, forced the game into a shootout where goaltender Devin Cooley made crucial saves.
Matthew Tkachuk, the Florida Panthers forward who arrived in Zurich on Tuesday, made his tournament debut and contributed to the offensive push, though he would miss his own penalty attempt, a setback that underscored the fine margins of the contest.
Switzerland’s Perfect Run Continues
Across the city in Fribourg, Switzerland maintained an immaculate record with a 9‑0 thrashing of Austria, a result that keeps the hosts unbeaten and fuels their ambition to capitalize on home‑crowd support.
Theo Rochette, Nico Hischier and Damien Riat each contributed two goals, while Leonardo Genoni turned away 20 shots, allowing only a single goal in the shootout against the United States earlier in the tournament.
The Swiss, who have now won four straight games and sit atop Group A with twelve points, will look to extend their momentum as they chase a historic championship on home ice.
Czechia’s Late Surge Over Italy
In Group B, Czechia rallied from an early deficit to defeat Italy 3‑1, with Jakub Flek delivering the winner with just over eight minutes remaining in the third period.
Italy had taken the lead in the second period through Nicholas Saracino, but the Czechs outshot the Italians 58‑15, and goals from Marek Alscher and Dominik Kubalík sealed a comfortable victory that keeps them at the summit of their group with ten points.
Sweden’s Dominance in Fribourg
Sweden completed the round of fixtures with a 6‑0 drubbing of Slovenia, courtesy of two‑goal performances from Raymond Lucas and Jacob de la Rose, complemented by markers from Robert Hagg and Mattias Ekholm.
The Swedish side, now sitting comfortably in their group, will hope to carry that form into the knockout stages as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
