UAB Women's Basketball Set for Jacksonville Classic
The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s women’s basketball team will travel to Jacksonville, Florida, for a three‑day showcase event running from November 23 to 25. The tournament, known as the Jacksonville Classic, will bring together several mid‑major programs for a slate of early‑season contests.
UAB will open against George Washington, a rematch of a 1994 meeting that ended in a 74‑66 loss for the Blazers. This time, the team hopes to reverse the earlier result as it prepares for a demanding schedule.
Also in the field is Virginia, the Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse that reached the Sweet 16 a year ago after posting a 22‑win season. The Cavaliers previously fell to UAB in 2006, a 81‑63 victory that remains a highlight in the program’s recent history.
Historic Matchups and Recent Form
George Washington, competing in the Atlantic 10 Conference, captured 18 wins last season and advanced to the WNIT Great Eight, underscoring the team’s upward trajectory. Virginia, meanwhile, not only secured 22 victories but also earned a Sweet 16 berth in the NCAA Tournament, reflecting the high caliber of competition UAB will face.
The tournament’s schedule will be announced in the coming weeks, with ticket information to follow. In the meantime, UAB’s athletic department continues to promote the 2026‑27 Gold Card, which grants access to home events across multiple sports, though it excludes American Conference and NCAA Championship games.
