UAB women's basketball head coach Randy Norton announced the hiring of Zakyia Weathersby, a former standout player for the Blazers, to join his coaching staff as an assistant coach, marking a strategic addition to the program's development efforts.
Weathersby’s collegiate tenure at UAB was defined by dominance in the post, where she led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocks during her final season and earned All‑Conference USA First Team and Defensive Team honors, cementing her status as one of the program’s most impactful players.
A Homecoming for a Champion
After her professional experience overseas in Turkey and Mexico — including a season with Ferhatoglu Edremit where she averaged 26.6 points and 14.9 rebounds per game — she returned to the collegiate ranks as a graduate assistant at Southern Miss during the 2025‑26 campaign.
In that role she coordinated practice logistics, edited game film, compiled statistics and led individualized development sessions for post players, while also supporting recruiting operations and official visits, gaining a broad skill set that bridges player development and operational efficiency.
Her return to Birmingham is more than a sentimental homecoming; it equips the Blazers with a coach who intimately understands the program’s culture, brings championship experience and can translate elite post play into everyday practice, reinforcing the team’s competitive foundation under Coach Norton.
