UC San Diego's men's soccer squad faced off against a visiting San Diego side in an exhibition match at Triton Soccer Stadium, finishing level at 0‑0. The contest, played under clear skies in California, saw the Tritons control much of the early play but were unable to break the deadlock.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Nic Thiele was the backbone of the home side, logging three saves and preserving a clean sheet. His performance earned praise from teammates and coaches alike, and he was the only player to finish the full 90 minutes alongside midfielder Gavin Carlson.
The first half belonged to the Tritons, who outshot their opponents and earned a series of corner kicks. Forward Sean McTague tested the visiting keeper with the first shot on target of the match, while a flurry of attacks from Gavin Allegaert and Owen Helm kept the pressure high.
San Diego's Toreros threatened early, forcing Thiele into an initial save, but the Tritons answered with two more shots on target before the break. A free‑kick from Jack Nishimoto in the second half forced a diving stop from the opposing goalkeeper, highlighting the tactical adjustments made after halftime.
As the clock wound down, Thiele delivered a final, decisive save in the dying seconds, ensuring the match ended without a goal. The exhibition served as a valuable rehearsal for the team's next encounter, scheduled for August 11 against Arizona Western at the same venue. Coach Richard Hoang highlighted the experience gained by the five starters who also featured in last season's lineup, noting that players such as Oren Stuppel and Richard Hoang will be key contributors as the roster builds toward competitive play.
