UC Santa Barbara Gauchos Aim to Revive NCAA Tournament Success

Coach Tim Vom Steeg leads a revamped roster as the program celebrates historic milestones

Tim Vom Steeg, the winningest coach in UC Santa Barbara men’s soccer history, is entering a season that marks both the 50th year of the program and the 60th anniversary of Harder Stadium, the venue that has hosted the Gauchos since 1966.

A Milestone Season

The coaching staff has assembled a roster that blends proven talent with fresh blood, highlighting players such as defender Calle Mollerberg, goalkeeper Owen Beninga and forward Donovan Sessoms, all of whom earned spots on the United Soccer Coaches preseason watch lists.

New arrivals include transfers Viggo Gustavsson, attacking midfielder Kalle Rahbek and freshman Gunnar Franke, while returning standouts Steinar Bjornsson and Simone Ferrieri add depth to the midfield and attack.

The Gauchos open the campaign at home against San José State before traveling to face ranked opponents including No. 17 Marshall, No. 18 San Diego and No. 19 Oregon State, as well as a road trip that takes them to Cornell, Rutgers and Grand Canyon’s Sweet 16 club, a schedule designed to boost their RPI and stay within the top 20.

Coach Vom Steeg points to the NCAA transfer portal as a catalyst, noting that more than 2,000 athletes moved schools in 2023, allowing the program to plug gaps quickly and field a defense anchored by Mollerberg and Beninga while sharpening an attack led by Bjornsson and new arrivals.

The defense also welcomes right back Simone Ferrieri and Peleg Brown, while midfield creativity will be bolstered by Rahbek and Franke, creating a balanced unit capable of challenging elite competition.

Beyond the current roster, Vom Steeg’s legacy includes two National Coach of the Year awards (2004, 2006), 15 NCAA tournament appearances and a record of 324‑152‑76 over 26 seasons, positioning the Gauchos to challenge for a national championship once again.
