A New Chapter for the Bruins
The UCLA Bruins are preparing for a season that could define the next chapter of their program. Under head coach Mick Cronin, the team enters with lofty expectations to break past recent disappointments and secure a spot in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament.
Last year ended without a ranking and with a 24‑12 record that left many questioning the trajectory of the program. Key contributors such as Donovan Dent, Tyler Biladeau and Skyy Clark have moved on, leaving a void that the coaching staff is trying to fill through the transfer portal and internal development.
Cronin has assembled a promising group of newcomers, including Jaylen Petty and Filip Jovic, while retaining the only major returning player, Trent Perry. Perry’s 13‑point average and solid shooting percentages provide a foundation on which the team hopes to build.
The competitive landscape of the Big Ten adds another layer of challenge, as traditional powerhouses like Michigan, Illinois and Purdue continue to raise the bar. Nevertheless, the Bruins view the conference schedule as an opportunity to test themselves against the nation’s best and sharpen their tournament résumé.
If the blend of experienced returnees, impact transfers and Cronin’s tactical acumen clicks, UCLA could rediscover the form that once propelled them to a Final Four appearance in 2020. The ultimate measure of success will be a deep run in March, beginning with a realistic target of an Elite Eight appearance.
