A Pivotal Year for the Bruins
Mick Cronin is entering a crucial year as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins, a program that has seen both promise and disappointment in recent seasons.
Last offseason the Bruins made significant moves in the transfer portal, bringing in players such as Donovan Dent and Xavier Booker, hoping to bolster a squad that finished the previous year with a 24‑12 record and a 13‑7 mark in Big Ten play.
Despite being preseason ranked 12th in the conference, the team ended up in the middle of the league, a placement that CBS Sports later confirmed by placing UCLA in tier three of its conference rankings, alongside programs like Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio State, Purdue and Maryland.
Trotter of CBS Sports highlighted the additions of Jaylen Petty, Filip Jovic and Azavier Robinson, noting that while the roster has depth, the lack of established star power remains a concern.
With senior Tyler Bilodeau gone and senior guard Donovan Dent no longer on campus, the offensive reins will be handed to Trent Perry, who must now become the go‑to option for the Bruins.
Perry will need productive seasons from Petty and Xavier Booker, especially as Booker works to improve his perimeter shooting to open driving lanes for Perry.
The Bruins also pursued Tounde Yessoufou, but the recruit ultimately chose St. John's, leaving UCLA to rely on internal development and the chemistry of its new transfers.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming season will test whether the blend of experienced transfers and emerging talent can translate into a higher conference standing and a deeper run in the NCAA tournament.
