Portal Additions
UCLA’s new head coach Bob Chesney revamps the roster, targeting the wide receiver position and injecting fresh talent through the transfer portal. After a season that left the Bruins short of elite playmakers, Chesney turned to the portal to add speed and depth to the offense.
One of the more notable departures was Kwazi Gilmer, who posted 535 receiving yards last year before deciding to continue his career at Nebraska. His exit creates a vacancy that the coaching staff is eager to fill.
The answer, according to Chesney, lies in two recent portal acquisitions: Leland Smith and Landon Ellis. Both players arrived in Westwood with proven track records of stretching the field and delivering in key moments.
Smith, a deep‑ball specialist, enjoyed a breakout year at San Jose State where he amassed 688 yards and three touchdowns. His reputation for hitting the 35‑yard and 40‑yard marks repeatedly suggests he could become a primary target for the Bruins’ new quarterback.
Ellis brings a different skill set. At James Madison he thrived under Chesney, posting 624 yards and five touchdowns while also proving adept at multiple alignments. His versatility gives the Bruins the flexibility to shift formations and keep defenses guessing.
Looking Ahead
With both Smith and Ellis now in the mix, quarterback Nico Iamaleava will have a duo of reliable receiving options. The coaching staff believes the combination could turn UCLA’s passing attack into one of the most dynamic in the Pac‑12.
The upcoming season will be a test of how quickly the new pieces click, but early indications point to a more balanced and potent offense. If the chemistry develops as expected, the Bruins could see a sharp rise in scoring and field position control.
