The University of Connecticut’s football program is ticking down the days until the 2026 season kicks off, with exactly 49 days remaining on the calendar.
Opening the Season
The Huskies will open the year at home against Lafayette on September 5, marking the start of a schedule that also includes matchups with Syracuse, North Carolina, Maryland and James Madison. The slate features seven home games and five road contests, offering a balanced mix of conference and non‑conference opponents.
Fans can purchase single‑game tickets beginning July 24 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, a date that has already sparked excitement across campus and among alumni.
A New Coaching Direction
The program arrives at this juncture after back‑to‑back nine‑win seasons and consecutive appearances in the Fenway Bowl, achievements that have raised expectations among the fan base. However, the team will be led by a new head coach. Jim Mora, who guided the Huskies for the past few years, has accepted a position at Colorado State, paving the way for Jason Candle, formerly of Toledo, to take the reins.
Candle brings a decade of success at Toledo to the role, and his hiring signals a shift in philosophy as the staff looks to develop fresh starters at quarterback, running back and wide receiver.
Among the newcomers is former Tennessee quarterback Jake Merklinger, who will wear a UConn jersey this fall, adding depth to the backfield.
The roster also features players such as Joe Fagnano, Cam Edwards and Skyler Bell, all of whom are expected to compete for starting spots during the preseason.
Off‑Court Spotlight
Outside of football, UConn basketball standout Braylon Mullins has earned a nomination for the ESPY Award for Play of the Year, recognizing a game‑saving shot he delivered against Duke on March 29 that secured a 73‑72 victory and propelled the team to the Final Four.
Media Day is scheduled for July 23, giving the public a first look at the revamped squad before tickets go on sale.
As the countdown continues, the Huskies remain focused on building chemistry, embracing new strategies and aiming to translate early momentum into a successful season.
