UConn’s football program is entering a rebuilding phase after a wave of departures among coaches and players, setting the stage for a fresh look on the field.
First‑year head coach Jason Candle has restocked the roster with 57 newcomers acquired through the transfer portal and seven early‑enrolled freshmen, injecting a blend of experience and youthful energy.
Central to the early chemistry efforts is a 15‑player leadership council, on which offensive lineman Ty Chan serves. Chan, who chose to remain at UConn to complete his collegiate career, brings a steady presence that the coaching staff hopes will ripple through the locker room.
Chan says his own growth as a leader was shaped by watching veterans such as Skyler Bell and Cam Edwards put in relentless work, and he now pays that example forward by guiding younger teammates.
Beyond the grind of practice, the squad has found camaraderie in unexpected places: evenings spent by the pool, weekend paintball battles, and summer bass‑fishing trips with defensive back Braedyn Moore that have turned into bonding rituals.
Wide receiver Ryder Treadway notes that the simple pleasure of hanging out in the locker room and “messing around” with teammates helps keep the atmosphere light while the team prepares for the upcoming season.
With roughly 45 days left before the 2026 kickoff, Candle says the group’s competitive spirit is already evident, and he expects that energy to carry through August and September practices.
