A New Chapter for the Huskies
The University of Connecticut's women's basketball program opened its summer session with a roster that blends proven veterans and exciting international prospects. Head coach Geno Auriemma emphasized that the team will operate with a smaller lineup, allowing for tighter rotations and more consistent minutes for each player.
Returning standouts include Sarah Strong, the reigning National Player of the Year, who led the team with 18.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game last season. Senior guard KK Arnold contributed 2.7 steals per game and 4.6 assists, while Ashlynn Shade emerged as the program's most reliable rebounding guard. Junior forward Jana El Alfy and redshirt junior center Jana El Alfy provided key interior presence, and junior guard Kayleigh Heckel was celebrated for her defensive energy off the bench.
The incoming freshmen class brings a global flair to Storrs. Marine Dursus from France joins after a professional stint overseas, while Serbian guard Jovana Popovic arrives with a strong Under-18 European Championship pedigree, averaging 15.2 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The highly touted Olivia Vukosa, the No. 2-ranked recruit in the Class of 2026, will anchor the frontcourt as a center.
The program also welcomes Serah Williams, Caroline Ducharme, Ayanna Patterson, Ice Brady and Gandy Malou-Mamel, each of whom adds depth and versatility. Sophomore forward Blanca Quiñonez, a 2026 Big East Freshman and Sixth Player of the Year award winner, is expected to see increased playing time alongside Kelis Fisher, who is slated for more consistent minutes at the point guard position.
The team will also navigate the loss of several players to the professional ranks. Notably, Azzi Fudd was selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings, while other departures include contracts with the Portland Fire, Golden State Valkyries, Kentucky, Florida State, Angers and Christ the King High School. These transitions reflect both the program's talent pipeline and the competitive landscape of women's professional basketball.
With a refreshed roster and a focus on cohesive rotations, the Huskies hope to translate their summer work into a strong showing in the upcoming season. The blend of experienced leaders like Sarah Strong and emerging international talent positions UConn to remain a formidable force in collegiate basketball.
