The University of Connecticut’s defense is entering a pivotal year, with a renewed emphasis on the secondary that promises size, experience, and untapped potential. New defensive coordinator Ryan Manalac has outlined a strategy that leans heavily on the unit’s ability to create turnovers and pressure opposing quarterbacks, setting the tone for an aggressive approach on the field.
Head coach Jason Candle brings a proven track record of developing defensive backs who have thrived at higher levels, having mentored players such as Quinyon Mitchell and Samuel Womack III. His philosophy of nurturing talent while demanding accountability is now being applied to a group that includes Jayden Davis, Braedyn Moore, Moussa Kane, Stephen Miller and freshman Shmar Akande.
Davis, a Fresno State transfer, appeared in all 12 games last season, recording 37 tackles, a sack and an interception, while Moore, who moved from Toledo, contributed six stops in 13 appearances and is expected to assume a leadership role. Kane, a Duke transfer, brings a physical presence after posting 17 tackles, two interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery in just 10 games. Miller, a USC transfer, is viewed as a reclamation project after limited snaps in his lone season, and Akande, a highly touted freshman who originally committed to Toledo, arrives with a high school résumé that includes 63 tackles, 39 pass deflections, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries over three varsity years.
A Glimpse of the Unit in Action
During an open practice that drew fans and teammates alike, the secondary showcased its chemistry and speed, with each player appearing ready to make plays. K'Von Sherman noted that the group is composed of young athletes who are actively improving and taking ownership of their development, a sentiment that reflects the coaching staff’s confidence in the unit’s upside.
The aggressive scheme being implemented requires corners who can lock down receivers and safeties who can patrol the back end effectively. With a blend of seasoned transfers and emerging talent, UConn’s defensive backs are positioned to exceed expectations and help the team compete at a higher level this season.
