The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo women’s soccer squad has been celebrated for its remarkable commitment to community service, capturing the 2025–26 Pacific West Conference Women’s Team Community Engagement Award.
A Season Defined by Service
During the 2025–26 campaign the team logged 637.5 hours of volunteer work that spanned campus initiatives, school programs and local events, from beach clean‑ups to youth sports clinics.
Their outreach included Mālama ʻĀina Day, support for the Merrie Monarch Festival, assistance at Boo at the Zoo, and participation in Special Olympics activities, as well as reading sessions with elementary students on Dr. Seuss Day.
Athlete‑students also helped with Move‑in Day, health fairs, and local soccer tournaments such as the Waiākea High School Nā Hoa Cup and the Mini Big Tournament, strengthening ties across Hilo.
Leadership Voices
Athletics Director Patrick Guillen highlighted the squad’s dedication, noting that their impact extends far beyond the pitch and reflects a culture of accountability and initiative.
Head Coach Gene Okamura added that the experience has fostered growth in leadership, teamwork and community connection among the players.
The honor follows the program’s earlier recognition with the 2024–25 PacWest Team Engagement Award, underscoring a sustained pattern of service excellence.
