A Strategic Boost for the Black Bears
The University of Maine’s field hockey program is set to welcome five new student‑athletes for the 2026 campaign, a move that coaches say could reshape the team’s dynamics on both ends of the pitch.
Heidi Fletcher, a forward from York, England, arrives after a standout season in which she topped her university side with 21 goals, while Fiona Günsch brings a championship pedigree from Lüneburg, Germany, where she captured two German titles and earned a spot on the U18 national squad.
Defender Annabel Halkes, recently crowned Dutch champion with Haarlem, was also recognized as her team’s MVP for the 2024‑25 season, adding a defensive solidity that the program hopes to translate into tighter backlines.
Midfielder Charlotte McNeill, hailing from Harleysville, Pennsylvania, earned first‑team all‑league honors and was named offensive MVP in 2025, a testament to her scoring prowess that could bolster the Black Bears’ attack.
Rounding out the class, Luisa Müller from Munich, Germany, not only captained the US Sport Scholarships (UK Lions) at a national hockey festival in Florida but also earned a place on the Croatian U18 national team, bringing international experience to the roster.
Coach Josette Babineau expressed enthusiasm about the incoming talent, noting that each player’s commitment to the team’s culture aligns with the program’s long‑term vision.
The additions underscore the university’s strategy of recruiting globally competitive athletes, a trend that has seen the program draw talent from across Europe and North America in recent years.
Fans can look forward to seeing how these newcomers integrate with returning veterans as the Black Bears aim to climb the America East standings in the upcoming season.
