The University of Massachusetts basketball program is set to embark on an international itinerary that will take its newest roster pieces across the border into Canada, where they will test themselves against local powerhouses and soak up a different style of play.
At the heart of the squad is Abdullah Ahmed, a 6‑foot‑10 forward/center who arrives from BYU after a season in which he logged 20 appearances and proved his shot‑blocking prowess. Freshman guard Christian Martin, a recent graduate of Wilbraham & Monson Academy and the No. 16 recruit in Massachusetts for the class of 2026, joins the mix, adding youthful energy.
Guiding the group is assistant coach Brian Steele, who transitioned to UMass in 2022 after a stint with South Carolina’s staff under Frank Martin. Steele’s experience as a three‑year letterwinner and Final Four participant brings a seasoned perspective to the team’s preparation.
A Cross‑Border Challenge
The tour is orchestrated by USA East Coast, a nonprofit founded in 2006 by coach Guy Rancourt that has spent two decades pairing U.S. student‑athletes with overseas competition and cultural immersion. The organization has represented the United States in fifteen countries, using basketball as a bridge for global understanding.
After a narrow 79‑75 victory over Concordia in Montreal, the squad will next face the Laval Rouge Et Or in Quebec City. Beyond the games, the itinerary includes guided tours, community clinics and other cultural activities designed to deepen the athletes’ appreciation of their host nation.
