UMass Lowell’s field hockey program is gearing up for the 2026 campaign with the addition of eight new student‑athletes, a mix of international recruits and domestic standouts who bring a variety of accolades and playing experience.
A Global Roster Takes Shape
The incoming class features players who have excelled on the world stage and at home, from a Dutch back who transferred from Syracuse to a California midfielder who dominated high school competition. Frederique van den Dungen, a 5‑foot‑4 sophomore from Rosmalen, Netherlands, arrives after a stint at Syracuse University, bringing a blend of agility and tactical awareness. Sophie Han, a 5‑6 freshman from Moorpark, California, earned recognition for her midfield prowess at Moorpark High School.
Mae Kemps, a 5‑2 freshman midfielder from Vught, Netherlands, joins after a successful club career with MOP Vught, while Shaye Lastella, a 5‑4 forward from New Jersey, surpassed the 100‑point milestone in her high school career. Kendal Leeland, a 5‑8 back from Towson, Maryland, was selected to the IAAM All‑Conference A Team, and Sophia Setouhi, a Watertown, Massachusetts native, concluded her high school tenure with 103 straight victories.
Ella Sluder, a 5‑7 forward from Allentown, New Jersey, crossed the 200‑point threshold in her prep career, and Kat Staruski, also from New Jersey, adds depth to the attacking lineup. The group is further rounded out by Mira Novak, a forward from Foxboro, Massachusetts, and Nora Belin, who will be joining the squad from Connecticut.
Opening Test Against Connecticut
The River Hawks will open the season at home against the University of Connecticut on August 16, a matchup that promises to showcase the new talent on display.
