A Promising Start to the 2026 Campaign
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County women's soccer team kicked off its 2026 schedule with a convincing 3-1 victory against Mount St. Mary's, turning the early season excitement into a statement of intent. From the first whistle, the Retrievers controlled the tempo and created numerous chances, ultimately securing a comfortable margin of victory.
Just 9 minutes and 32 seconds into the match, sophomore midfielder Zoe Brossman opened the scoring after a costly misstep by Mount goalkeeper Abigail Makela. Brossman pounced on the loose ball and slotted it calmly into the net, giving UMBC an early lead that set the tone for the rest of the game.
The Retrievers doubled their advantage seven minutes later when freshman forward Brooke Clagett found the back of the net. The goal came after a beautifully executed through-ball from sophomore defender Cami Mink, which split the defense and allowed Clagett to finish with composure.
Defensive Resilience and Goalkeeping Excellence
UMBC's junior keeper Amara Codd was a standout presence between the posts, making two spectacular saves that kept the Mountaineers at bay. In the first half, she denied an arching attempt from Anika Berger, and after the break she again thwarted a dangerous effort by Peyton Gallagher, preserving the lead.
The defensive unit also stepped up when senior co-captain Reagan Casper added the final blow in the 69th minute. Hailey Ahmed redirected Casper's strike into the net, capping off a well-rounded offensive display.
Statistically, UMBC outshot the visitors 17-14 and earned six corner kicks compared to just two for Mount St. Mary's, underscoring the Retrievers' dominance in possession and set-piece opportunities. The team's blend of attacking firepower and disciplined defending bodes well for the remainder of the schedule.
Looking ahead, the Retrievers will host American University on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. for a one-dollar hot dog night event, offering fans another chance to experience the team's growing momentum.
