A New Era for the Tar Heels
North Carolina has officially released its 2026‑27 men’s basketball roster, a 16‑player lineup that marks Michael Malone’s first season at the helm. The announcement comes as the Tar Heels prepare to open preseason competition against USC in Greensboro on October 9.
The roster retains five seniors who helped shape last year’s campaign: Jarin Stevenson, Jaydon Young, Evan Smith, John Holbrook and Isaiah Denis. Their experience is expected to provide continuity as the team integrates new talent.
Four freshmen join the squad — Maximo Adams, Sayon Keita, Malloy Smith and Kevin Thomas — while six transfers bring additional depth. Among them are Angelo Brizzi, Cameron Fens, Terrence Brown, Matt Able, Neoklis Avdalas and Cade Bennerman, each bringing distinct skill sets to the mix.
The international flavor of the roster is notable. Sayon Keita, a native of Bamako, becomes only the second African player in UNC history after Makhtar Ndiaye. Meanwhile, Greeks Alexandros Samodurov and Neoklis Avdalas represent the program’s first-ever Greek athletes. In total, 18 international Tar Heels have worn the Carolina blue over the years.
Coach Malone emphasized that the blend of returning veterans, promising newcomers and global talent sets a strong foundation for the upcoming season. The team will rely on this diverse mix as it aims to contend in the ACC and beyond.
