North Carolina’s men’s basketball program unveiled a nonconference schedule that reads like a tournament draw, featuring marquee matchups against Arkansas, Kentucky and Illinois. The slate is designed not only to test the team early but also to forge chemistry before the ACC grind begins.
Neutral‑Site Showdowns in the Tar Heel State
Two of the games will be played on neutral sites within North Carolina. In Greensboro, the Tobacco Road Classic will pit the Heels against longtime rival N.C. State for the first time since 1979, while Charlotte will host a clash with West Virginia as part of the Dick Vitale Invitational during Thanksgiving week.
October will also bring three preseason exhibitions against Southern California, Indiana and Charlotte, giving Malone and his staff a chance to fine‑tune rotations before the regular season opener.
Road Tests and Early Milestones
The first official game under Malone’s leadership is scheduled for November 2 against Western Carolina, a matchup that will mark the debut of a roster bolstered by transfers and international talent. From there, the Heels travel to Arkansas to play at the Smith Center, head to New York’s Madison Square Garden for a showdown with Kentucky, and journey to Nashville for the Hoops Showdown against Illinois.
A true road test awaits in Washington, D.C., where the team will face Georgetown, adding another layer of competition to the early schedule.
Alongside the demanding opponents, the roster will feature newcomers such as Terrence Brown, Neokils Avdalas, Matt Able, Sayon Keita and Alexandros Samodurov, each bringing a different skill set to the mix.
