The University of North Carolina Asheville’s advisory committee has formally recommended against constructing a soccer stadium on the South Campus woods, a tract locally known as The Woods.
Community Response and the Save the Woods Campaign
Residents and alumni have rallied under the banner Save the Woods, arguing that the forest serves as a rare urban green space that supports biodiversity, recreation and local culture. Former UNC Asheville professor David Clarke, who remains a vocal advocate for balanced growth, echoed these concerns while emphasizing that the university should explore alternative sites for expansion.
Artistic and Educational Vision for the Woods
Local artist Spencer Beals has suggested repurposing the area for research initiatives, public art installations and environmental education programs, proposing a model that integrates academic inquiry with community engagement.
The committee’s report also highlighted the need to prioritize student housing and other infrastructure that directly addresses enrollment pressures, stating that future development must align with the institution’s mission and the broader community’s needs.
While the recommendation is not final, the university is currently evaluating other potential sites, including the Broadway Property and the Rhoades Property, to determine the most suitable locations for upcoming projects.
