UNC Basketball Unveils 2026‑27 Roster with Global Talent and Historic Jersey Numbers

New head coach Michael Malone oversees a revamped squad featuring five returnees and 11 newcomers, including the program’s first players from Greece and Africa.

Under new head coach Michael Malone, the University of North Carolina has completed a sweeping overhaul of its men’s basketball roster for the 2026‑27 season. The team will feature five returning players — Jarin Stevenson, Jaydon Young, Evan Smith, John Holbrook and Isaiah Denis — alongside a fresh infusion of talent.

Eleven newcomers will join the squad, comprising four freshmen, six college transfers and an international player. Among them, Alexandros Samodurov and Neo Avdalas become the first Tar Heels to hail from Greece, while Sayon Keita marks only the second African player in UNC history.

Historic Jersey Numbers

The roster also brings a series of historic jersey numbers. John Holbrook will wear No. 99, the first player to do so, while Isaiah Denis trades his freshman No. 5 for the prestigious No. 2. Malloy Smith continues a family legacy with No. 30, Neo Avdalas becomes the first to sport No. 17 since Bill White in 1950, and Cameron Fens joins the ranks of those who have worn No. 54.

Preseason action begins on October 9 when the Tar Heels face Southern California at the First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, setting the stage for a promising campaign.
