North Carolina’s basketball program has extended a scholarship to Asa Montgomery, a 6-foot-7, 195-pound small forward who dazzled at the recent Peach Jam showcase.
Montgomery, hailing from Powder Springs, Georgia, arrives on the national radar with a No. 42 overall ranking and the distinction of being the premier small forward in his state, a combination that has attracted considerable attention from college scouts.
The offer places the Tar Heels alongside a dozen other powerhouse programs — including Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, Florida State and Louisville — that have already courted the versatile forward, each hoping to secure his commitment before the 2027 signing period.
A Strategic Move for the Tar Heels
Coach Michael Malone, who has been instrumental in shaping UNC’s recruiting strategy, sees in Montgomery a player who can stretch the floor and provide a dynamic wing presence, qualities that align with the team’s evolving tactical identity.
The recruitment of Montgomery is more than a single addition; it signals UNC’s intent to reshape its roster with high-caliber talent that can compete on the national stage, a move that could influence the program’s trajectory in the coming years.
