Coach Erin Matson, who took over the program in 2023, has built a reputation for road dominance, posting a 22‑2 record in true away games and never dropping more than two road contests in a single season.
The 2026 schedule is among the most challenging in recent memory, featuring eight away fixtures that include a five‑game stretch through Stanford and California, as well as a marquee ACC‑Big Ten Challenge matchup against Michigan and Iowa, teams against whom the Tar Heels hold a 37‑7 combined record in season‑opening meetings.

The season will culminate with the ACC Championship hosted in Chapel Hill, giving the Tar Heels the chance to defend their title on home soil and chase a historic tenth consecutive conference crown.
Matson’s roster will be largely reshaped, as departing seniors Ryleigh Heck, Sietske Brüning, Dani Mendez and Sanne Hak have moved on, creating openings for a new wave of talent to contribute immediately.
