A Program at a Crossroads
ESPN’s latest 2026 college football rankings place the North Carolina Tar Heels in the lowest tier, grouping them with Boston College, Purdue, Stanford, Michigan State, Iowa State and Colorado.
The Tar Heels finished the previous season 4‑8, marking their first year under head coach Bill Belichick and underscoring the steep climb facing the program.
Adding to the turbulence, general manager Michael Lombardi was placed on paid leave and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick was on medical leave as the team prepared for the upcoming campaign.
The 2025 schedule was already the 80th‑toughest in the nation, and the 2026 slate moves to 29th in difficulty, representing the biggest jump in strength of opposition among Power 4 schools.
Analysts say the only realistic path out of the bottom tier is a comprehensive rebuild — hiring a new coach, attracting top talent and securing additional financial resources — an approach reminiscent of Indiana’s turnaround a few years ago.
If the Tar Heels can execute that overhaul, the coming seasons could see them rise from the foot of the rankings to contenders within the Power 4.
