The UNC Greensboro baseball squad entered the Southern Conference Tournament with a blend of hope and determination, aware that a single contest could define their postseason trajectory.
Their opening matchup against the ETSU Buccaneers quickly turned into a seesaw battle, ultimately swinging in UNCG’s favor by a 6-5 margin that left the crowd buzzing.
A Spark from the Start
Luke Holland ignited the offense by launching a solo home run on the very first pitch, a bold statement that set the tone for the Spartans. Jake Barbour followed with a timely RBI single, and later added another run with a sharp hit that kept the lead alive, while Luke Jenkins contributed an RBI double that shifted momentum.
On the mound, starter Noah Chapman surrendered four runs in the second inning, but the relief effort of Cannon Lee steadied the ship, delivering four and two-thirds innings of two-hit, zero-run baseball and striking out a career-high eight batters. Lee’s dominance was punctuated by back-to-back strikeouts and a pop-out that sealed the 6-5 victory, a moment that drew cheers from the bench and underscored the team’s resilience. The relief effort also benefited from the steady presence of Jacob Budzik, whose RBI single pulled the Spartans ahead 6-5, while Joseph Lee and Mayson Dear contributed valuable depth off the bench.
A Different Story Against Samford
The Spartans’ next contest pitted them against Samford, who erupted for three runs in the opening frame and added two more in the second to build an early cushion. Ethan Brittain managed to cut the deficit with an RBI single in the fifth inning, but Samford answered with a seven-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth, pulling away to a 13-1 final score. The game concluded with the Bulldogs retiring UNCG’s side in order, a stark contrast to the earlier thriller and leaving the Spartans to regroup for future matchups.
Despite the loss, the team’s early heroics — highlighted by Holland’s homer, Barbour’s clutch hits, Lee’s eight strikeouts, and Budzik’s timely RBI — provide a foundation to build upon as the season progresses. The roster also featured Joseph Lee and Mayson Dear, who were part of the team’s effort.
