Leadership Priorities Shift
The University of North Carolina’s ongoing review of potential upgrades to its basketball arena at the Smith Center remains suspended, with no announced date for when it might resume.
Steve Newmark, the university’s athletic director, explained that leadership is currently juggling a range of competing priorities, including the impact of name, image and likeness (NIL) deals and escalating operating costs.
The review was originally suspended in late March, just five days after the school dismissed Hubert Davis from his role as head coach of the men’s basketball team.
Since that pause, UNC has not signaled any intention to revive the discussion, leaving stakeholders without an update on possible timelines or strategic directions.
Newmark noted that the university’s bandwidth is being directed toward issues he described as more urgent, reflecting the broader pressures facing UNC athletics.
The delay underscores how external forces, from financial strain to evolving compensation models for student‑athletes, are compelling university leaders to reprioritize their focus.
