North Carolina has officially named Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. as its starting quarterback, ending a closely contested race for the job.
The competition that shaped the decision
Edwards edged out Texas A&M transfer Miles O’Neill, who had been a backup with limited 2024 action, for the top spot.
In 2024, Edwards threw for 15 touchdowns and 9 interceptions over 2,881 yards at Maryland before transferring to Wisconsin, where a left knee injury limited him to just a few snaps in 2025.
Coach’s endorsement
Coach Bill Belichick praised Edwards as one of the top passers in the Big Ten two years ago and noted his experience and performance as key factors in the decision.
The Tar Heels hope the veteran’s skill set will translate into a stronger offense as they prepare for the upcoming season.
