A New Era Under Belichick
The University of North Carolina will kick off the 2026 football season on August 29 in Dublin, Ireland, facing Texas Christian University in what marks the program’s first regular‑season game played overseas. The matchup introduces coach Bill Belichick to the Tar Heels’ sidelines, adding a fresh narrative to a tradition‑rich team.
Returning captains Christo Kelly, Jordan Shipp and Melkart Abou Jaoude anchor the roster, each bringing a season of experience under Belichick’s guidance. Their leadership is viewed as the foundation upon which the new coaching staff will build a competitive unit.
Freshman offensive lineman Will Conroy, hailing from Ohio, has already drawn praise from Kelly for his poise at center, while tight end Carson Sneed from Nashville earned the nickname “beast” for his physicality and blocking ability. Both are expected to see significant snaps early in the year.
Redshirt sophomore defensive back Peyton Waters, a native of Northridge, California, enjoyed a standout spring, according to Shipp, and will look to anchor the secondary. Running back Demon June, who led the team with 464 rushing yards last season, returns with momentum, and redshirt junior tight end Jelani Thurman, an Ohio State transfer, is slated for an expanded role in the offense.
The Tar Heels’ preparation also reflects a broader collegiate landscape, with connections to institutions such as the University of North Carolina, Texas Christian University and Ohio State University. The game in Ireland not only showcases the team’s talent but also highlights the growing global footprint of American college football.
