A Strong Start for the Tar Heels
The North Carolina women's soccer squad opened the 2026 regular season with a 4‑0 triumph over Fairfield University, a performance that underscored the team's depth and tactical cohesion.
From the opening whistle the Tar Heels controlled the tempo, generating 14 shots in the first half while Fairfield managed only a single attempt. Midfielder Lilliah Blum set up the first goal in the 33rd minute, threading a precise pass to Hope Munson, who finished calmly to put UNC ahead.
The second half saw Bella Devey extend the lead with two quick strikes. After a sustained attack, graduate midfielder Summer Denigan carried the ball forward and delivered a decisive pass that allowed Devey to score in the 64th minute, sealing the victory.
Defensively, UNC limited Fairfield's opportunities, clearing aerial threats and completing tackles to keep the opposition's attack at bay. Hope Munson, however, was taken off early in the second half due to injury, preventing a potential hat‑trick but preserving the team's lead.
Looking ahead, the Tar Heels are scheduled to face Quinnipiac on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dorrance Field, where they aim to carry forward the momentum generated by their opening win.
