A Commanding First Half
The No. 7 UNC women's soccer squad traveled to Fayetteville and walked away with a 2-0 victory that marked their first road win of the season. From the opening whistle the Tar Heels pressed forward, generating a flurry of chances that soon translated into goals.
Summer Denigan opened the scoring with a penalty kick after Scottie Antonucci was tripped inside the box, and just two minutes later Lilliah Blum added a second goal from a corner scramble. The quick strike left Arkansas scrambling to respond.
Arkansas managed its first genuine scoring opportunity in the 27th minute, but UNC goalkeeper Peyton Trayer made a comfortable save to preserve the lead. Throughout the half UNC outshot the Razorbacks 19 to 10 and earned nine corners to Arkansas's two, underscoring the Tar Heels' control.
The second half saw Arkansas increase its physicality, disrupting UNC's passing lanes and forcing a series of stoppages. A header from Arkansas was disallowed after a foul on Trayer, and Izzi Stratton's high shot tipped off the goalkeeper before being cleared.
Despite the heightened intensity, UNC remained composed, limiting Arkansas to few clear chances while maintaining possession. The defensive solidity and efficient attacking play set the stage for the team's upcoming test.
Next up, the Tar Heels will host No. 5 Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., a matchup that promises to further gauge UNC's rising momentum.
