North Carolina’s defense showed flashes of potential in 2025, but the numbers told a more nuanced story. The Tar Heels finished 38th in the nation for yards allowed per game and 66th for points conceded, while ranking 20th in sacks. Yet deeper metrics painted a picture of a unit that struggled to consistently pressure quarterbacks and convert third‑down stops.
What stood out, however, was the performance of the defensive line. Despite a modest overall record, the line posted the best statistics among all position groups, with minimal turnover and a relatively stable roster heading into the next season.
A Revamped Front Line
At the heart of that resurgence is senior edge rusher Melkart Abou‑Jaoude, who led the ACC with 10.5 sacks and generated 42 pressures on the quarterback, a 4‑to‑1 pressure‑to‑sack ratio that underscores his reliability as a pass‑rush threat.
Joining him are returning stalwarts Leroy Jackson and Isaiah Johnson. Jackson earned Freshman All‑American honors for his stout run defense and disruptive play, while Johnson contributed two sacks and was solid against the run, though his impact waned toward the latter part of the schedule.
The line also lost key contributors, including Tyler Thompson, who recorded seven sacks and two forced fumbles, as well as C.J. Mims and D’Antre Robinson, both of whom transferred to other programs.
Competing for the remaining starting spot are newcomers Jaylen Harvey and Donovan Hoilette. Harvey brings raw upside, while Hoilette arrives with Power 5 experience, having posted nine sacks and 13 tackles for loss in the previous season, including three pressures against UNC.
Because the unit operates on a heavy rotation, most starters see only half of the defensive snaps, raising concerns about fatigue and the risk of injury as the schedule toughens.
Nevertheless, the coaching staff and players alike express confidence that the line’s depth and experience can translate into game‑changing plays.
