The University of North Carolina Wilmington women's soccer squad posted a 2-1 victory on the road against Western Carolina on Sunday, earning their second straight win to start the season.
Caigan Leonard was the catalyst, striking twice and contributing an assist that helped the Seahawks pull ahead in the second half.
A fortuitous own goal by Western Carolina in the 33rd minute shifted momentum, but it was Leonard’s precision that sealed the result.
Defensively, the Seahawks limited the Catamounts to a single shot on goal while generating eight attempts of their own, showcasing a disciplined back line anchored by Macy Lutz, Alyssa Chuderewicz and Ava Chuderewicz.
In goal, Zoë Anderson and Lili White combined for three saves in the first half, preserving the narrow lead amid sweltering heat and humidity in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
Coach’s Praise and a Home Opener on the Horizon
Head Coach Chris Neal lauded the team’s execution, noting that the opening weekend results reflected the work put in during preseason training.
The squad will return to the comforts of home on August 20 to host Old Dominion in the first home match of the season, a game that will be streamed live on FloCollege.
With chemistry building and defensive solidity evident, the Seahawks look to extend their winning streak as they transition from the road to the familiar confines of the Wilmington campus.
