Deven Thompkins, the 5‑foot‑8, 155‑pound wide receiver known for his blistering speed, has officially signed with the Buffalo Bills after a standout performance at the team’s minicamp.
A tiny titan eyes a roster spot
At a size that places him among the league’s smallest players, Thompkins clocked a 4.35‑second 40‑yard dash at his Utah State pro day, a time that has drawn praise from Bills coaches who see him as a potential spark on both offense and special teams.
The journey to this moment has been anything but ordinary. As a child, Thompkins survived a severe dog attack that required more than 100 stitches, and he entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022. He later honed his craft at Utah State, finishing his college career with 102 receptions for 1,704 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning first‑team All‑Mountain West honors and a third‑team All‑American nod.
The Bills used the minicamp as a proving ground, also adding veteran wide receiver Max Tomczak to the roster while trimming a handful of experienced players. Among those released were Dorian Strong, Desmond Reid, and a host of other veterans such as Gabriel Benyard, Deone Walker, D.J. Moore, Khalil Shakir, Joshua Palmer, Keon Coleman, Skyler Bell, Trent Sherfield, Mecole Hardman Jr., Valen Virgil and Tyrell Shavers, clearing cap space for younger talent.
Thompkins brings a blend of agility and special‑teams experience, having logged 42 punt returns for 368 yards and 45 kickoff returns for 1,005 yards over his career with the Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, and Atlanta Falcons. If he can secure a spot on the Bills’ 53‑man roster, his speed could provide a fresh weapon in a crowded receiving corps.
