The Underwood baseball team saw its campaign end in the substate finals after a 4‑0 defeat to Orange City Unity Christian, finishing the year with a 22‑5 record.
Coach Andy Vanfossan noted that the squad was primarily composed of sophomores and freshmen, many of whom were thrust into new roles following the departure of key seniors.
Despite the loss, Vanfossan emphasized that the team overcame the absence of Garrett Luett, who chose to sit out his senior season to prepare for his future at the University of Iowa.
Key Performances and Emerging Stars
Adler Van Essen delivered a two‑hit shutout for the opposition, while sophomore Blake Brensel proved to be a two‑way standout, contributing both at the plate and on the mound.
Hudson Ross, who recovered from a track injury, took over shortstop duties and helped stabilize the defense.
The roster also featured a deep pool of underclassmen, including Kyle Sub, Maddox Mechaelsen, Gavin Miles, Coltin Johnson, Ryan Fletcher, Gabe Burns, and Jaedyn Van Scoyk, all of whom gained valuable varsity experience.
Freshmen Keaton Hawkins, Owen Fletcher, and Jackson Stanfill rounded out the young core, providing additional depth and optimism for the coming seasons.
Looking Ahead
With only two seniors — Ryker Adair and Connor Brummett — the team will return a largely intact group of underclassmen, giving the coaching staff a solid foundation to build upon.
Vanfossan said the immediate priority is to get stronger in the off‑season, a plan that aligns with the broader athletic development goals of the University of Iowa, which has been a point of reference for the program's future aspirations.
