Union County is set to host a family‑friendly celebration of America’s 250th anniversary on August 8 at Meisel Field in Springfield. The free, public event blends history, sport and community spirit with a vintage baseball game, a classic car showcase, live music and traditional American fare.
A Celebration of History and Community
The centerpiece of the day will be a historic baseball matchup between the 1859 Hoboken Base Ball Club and the Elizabeth Resolutes, recreating the rules and style of 19th‑century play on the open‑air diamond of Meisel Field.
From 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Galloping Hill Cruisers will display a curated collection of vintage automobiles, giving visitors a chance to wander through automotive history while enjoying the summer air.
At 11:00 a.m., the Westfield Community Concert Band will take the stage, filling the venue with patriotic melodies and classic tunes that echo the spirit of the nation’s founding.
Refreshments are abundant, with hot‑dog and ice‑cream vendors stationed throughout the grounds, and each of the first 750 guests will receive a complimentary mini apple pie as a sweet reminder of the occasion.
The program is made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission and is organized by the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, under the auspices of the Union County Board of County Commissioners. Admission is free and open to all residents, inviting families and history enthusiasts alike to share in the celebration.
