On Saturday, August 8, the Union County Board of County Commissioners will open the gates of Meisel Field in Springfield for a day‑long tribute to America’s 250th birthday, featuring a vintage baseball exhibition, a curated car show, and live musical performances.
A Day of History and Community
The centerpiece of the morning will be a matchup between the historic 1859 Hoboken Base Ball Club and the Elizabeth Resolutes, a reenactment that transports spectators back to the sport’s earliest days, when the Knickerbocker Rules first governed play.
From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Galloping Hill Cruisers will showcase a rotating collection of classic and modern automobiles, inviting visitors to admire the evolution of automotive design alongside the baseball festivities.
At 11 a.m., the Westfield Community Concert Band will take the stage, filling the field with patriotic melodies that complement the event’s celebratory atmosphere.
Food vendors will keep the crowd energized with hot dogs, ice cream, and complimentary mini‑apple pies, with the first 750 attendees receiving a special treat.
The gathering is organized in partnership with the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the New Jersey Institute for Disabilities.
John Prescott, a noted baseball historian, worked closely with Commissioners Joseph C. Bodek and Rebecca L. Williams to shape a program that underscores the cultural significance of the sport in Union County.
