A Sudden Leadership Change
The school district acted swiftly, appointing Dave Commesso as acting head coach and acting athletic director. Commesso, who previously served in supporting roles, now faces the task of stabilizing a program that has struggled with transfers and a recent class reclassification.
Niedbala's coaching journey began under Bob Palko at Mt. Lebanon, where the duo captured a 2021 PIAA Class 6A title. Before that, he played high school football at Blackhawk and later at Division II Clarion, earning a place in the university's Hall of Fame.
Roster Turmoil and Playoff Hopes
The 2023 season proved challenging. Three starters transferred to New Castle, further thinning the roster and contributing to the winless campaign that saw Union miss the WPIAL playoffs. The combination of player departures and a shift to Class A Big 7 left the team with limited depth.
Superintendent Dr. Michael Ross publicly thanked Niedbala for his service and emphasized the need for prompt leadership to manage preseason activities and prepare for the upcoming football season. His statement underscored the district's commitment to restoring competitiveness.
