United Township High School’s football program celebrated a milestone last season, snapping a 24‑year playoff drought and finishing with a 5‑5 record that sparked renewed optimism across the community.
The triumph, however, comes with a massive challenge: 23 seniors, among them 16 starters, have departed, leaving a young core that must quickly find its footing in a competitive Western Big Six Conference.
Among the few veterans who will carry the load are quarterback Jonathan Drake, who has already shown poise under center, and receiver Will Resius, whose speed and route‑running make him a constant threat on the outside.
Defensively, tackler Leo Sim and cornerback Ramadan Ghani are expected to anchor a unit that is focusing on tightening run defense and keeping opponents in front, a priority for head coach Nick Welch as he blends fresh talent with the few remaining experienced pieces.
Welch has emphasized a physical, disciplined style while giving younger players ample opportunity to develop, a strategy that reflects both pragmatism and confidence in the program’s long‑term growth.
The coaching staff has also introduced a new offensive identity, hoping to diversify play‑calling and exploit mismatches within the conference, while maintaining the hard‑nosed approach that defined last year’s success.
