Coach Moorhead was initially wary of the idea, but after a conversation about the potential boost to the program’s profile and name‑image‑likeness revenue, he gave his blessing, emphasizing that the effort would not tarnish the university, the sport, or the players.
The competition narrows down nine finalists — a mix of devoted ticket‑holders and a well‑known YouTuber — who will be entered into a random drawing to determine the winner.
Promoted across social‑media platforms, the campaign attracted more than 23 million views and generated an estimated 2.03 billion impressions worldwide, underscoring its reach beyond traditional sports circles.
A Social‑Media‑Driven Fan Experience
Organizers say the initiative is designed to funnel proceeds into NIL opportunities, with roughly 70 percent of the funds earmarked for coaches to use in recruiting and retaining talent.
The concept was sparked by University of Akron athletic director Andrew T. Goodrich and his senior deputy, Matt Pottorff, who observed the fervor of March Madness fans and sought to channel that energy into football.
Should a fan win, they will work directly with Moorhead to review scouting reports, brainstorm play options and ultimately shape the first series of the season opener against Robert Morris on September 12.
The contest is administered by the College of Business and the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, and the victor will be announced on August 25, just days before the home opener.
