The University of Alabama in Huntsville announced this week that Kevin Mitchell has joined the Chargers staff as an assistant coach for the baseball program, a move designed to bolster the team’s preparation for the upcoming 2026‑27 campaign.
Championship experience expected to reshape pitching staff
Mitchell arrives after a two‑year stint as Director of Pitching Development at Utah Valley, where he helped the program capture a conference title and earn a berth in the NCAA tournament. His seven years at the high‑school level, combined with a stint in the Western Canadian Baseball League that earned him the 2023 Coach of the Year award, give him a blend of developmental expertise and winning experience.
During his playing days at Rowan College of South Jersey, Mitchell was part of a squad that captured the 2013 NJCAA national championship, a testament to his deep roots in the sport.
The Chargers finished the previous season with a 21‑24 record, exiting the Gulf Coast Conference Tournament in the first round against Delta State. Head coach hopes Mitchell’s arrival will translate into a stronger pitching staff and a more competitive edge as the team aims to rebound in the next season.
While the full 2026‑27 schedule has not yet been released, the team plans to open competition in late January or early February, giving Mitchell ample time to implement his system before the first games.
