A dual‑track vision for Hawkeye athletics
The University of Iowa announced this week that it is seeking final approval to construct a dedicated field hockey operations building adjacent to Grant Field and to begin a comprehensive renovation of Carver‑Hawkeye Arena. Both initiatives are framed as investments in the future of Hawkeye sports, with the former focused on athlete development and the latter on enhancing the fan experience.
The new field hockey facility, priced at $8.65 million, will be financed entirely through donor contributions. Construction is slated to commence this summer, with an anticipated completion date of summer 2027. The building will house home and visitor locker rooms, staff offices, a film room, conference space and a versatile multi‑purpose area, while the team continues to train and compete at Grant Field throughout the build.
The arena renovation, estimated to cost between $50 million and $70 million, will be funded by private gifts. Planned upgrades include premium seating, a modernized concourse, upgraded concessions and restrooms, and an expanded seating bowl designed to deepen the game‑day atmosphere. The project aims to preserve the arena’s historic character while meeting the evolving demands of contemporary collegiate athletics.
A program with a proud legacy
The Iowa field hockey program stands as the Big Ten’s most successful since 1981, boasting 211 conference victories and 30 NCAA Tournament appearances. The upcoming facilities are intended to build on that tradition, providing current student‑athletes with resources that match the program’s historic excellence.
University officials Lisa Cellucci and Beth Goetz have been instrumental in advancing these projects, coordinating donor outreach and overseeing the planning phases. Their leadership reflects a broader commitment to elevating Iowa’s athletic infrastructure while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
