The University of Iowa announced an ambitious plan to construct a dedicated field hockey operations building adjacent to the existing athletic complex, a project that carries an estimated price tag of $8.65 million and is slated for completion by the summer of 2027.
Designed with student‑athlete development in mind, the new facility will house locker rooms, coaches’ offices, a film room, a conference suite and an athletic training room, while incorporating energy‑saving features such as daylighting and occupancy sensors.
University officials said the building will allow the program — already the Big Ten’s winningest since 1981 and a three‑time NCAA champion — to attract top talent and maintain its storied tradition of excellence.
Lisa Cellucci, a longtime benefactor of the program, and Beth Goetz, head coach of the Hawkeyes, were highlighted in the announcement as key supporters whose contributions help bridge the gap between aspiration and execution.
A New Era for Hawkeye Athletics
In parallel, the university will undertake a $50 million to $70 million renovation of Carver‑Hawkeye Arena, the 1983‑opened venue that currently seats 14,995 fans.
The arena upgrade will add premium seating options, expanded club spaces, modernized concourses and restrooms, and a new court that reflects recent improvements such as risers for the student section.
Funding for the renovation will come entirely from private gifts, with the work scheduled to unfold in phases over a two‑year period, aiming to modernize the facility while preserving its historic character.
University leaders emphasized that both the new field hockey building and the arena revamp are part of a broader strategy to enhance the overall fan experience and meet the evolving expectations of Hawkeye Athletics.
Construction on the field hockey facility is expected to commence this summer, with the arena renovation slated to begin shortly thereafter, ensuring that Hawkeye teams have state‑of‑the‑art environments for competition and community engagement by the end of 2027.
